Battle between sexes is a real thing and it is not strictly limited to humans. After you have chosen your ideal pet you should start thinking about the gender of your new puppy. Will it be a male or a female? When we are talking about gender differences in dogs we should treat them as tendencies more than characteristics. Dog breeders and dog coaches agree that differences between dog breeds are greater than differences between two genders of the same breed. The characteristics of one species are affected by many factors ranging from genetics over surroundings all the way to training which is owner’s responsibility. In order to get the best out of your pet it is important to educate yourself about the breed and try to follow as many advices given by the professionals modifying them to your pet’s needs because they are all individuals.

Rottweilers are balanced, confident and courageous dogs.  They get emotionally attached to their owners very quick and they get very protective over them. As highly intelligent dogs they are fast learners but have mind of their own so training your Rottie is very important. Character wise there are some differences between sexes. Females are less energetic but more affectionate and require a lot of petting which makes them easier to control, while males are playful and more watchful, making sure that their surrounding is free of threats. Being very intelligent, their training must be consistent, strict but not harsh. It is typical for the breed to try to bully you or bluff you until you establish leadership, but once you’re in control they will be your most loyal companion. Female Rotties are prone to mood swings and are affectionate on their own terms and will let you know when it’s enough of cuddling. Although females are less pushy and less in your face, they are more opinionated and can be very manipulative when they want to do something their way. Males have more stable and constant mood but can annoy you with their goofiness and excessive playfulness which can make their training more challenging. As previously mentioned, genetics play an important role in your Rotties personality, so if you are able meet at least one of the parents or siblings, preferably mother because it is most likely that your pet will be just like her.  Setting boundaries and making sure they are aware of the consequences of bad behavior takes time and patience but still is the best way of earning their respect. Female Rottweilers are less aggressive than males but are more protective due to their motherly instinct. Female Rotties can be very aggressive when meeting another dog of the same sex.  Socializing your Rottweiler is very important in developing their character and personality and it should be started while they are puppies. If possible, experienced breeders and trainers suggest raising both male and female. Don’t be afraid to expose them to many different people, sights and sounds when they are young. The easiest way to gaining social skills of your puppy is taking him to the parks, stores, and on long walks where it can interact with people and other dogs. Make sure that you are in control of your pet and that it is not in control of you.

Training a female Rottweiler is much easier than training a male one due to their playfulness and lack of concentration but if you want a competitor’s career for your dog you should get a male dog because they tend to do better in dog shows. The explanation for this phenomenon is that male Rottweilers are more prone to satisfying humans. Also, the female’s readiness for training depends on its sexual cycle and whether it is pregnant, has puppies, etc.

Depending on whether you want your pet to have offspring you can have them sterilized or not. Sterilized males are typically more peaceful than non-sterilized ones. Semiannual heat cycles of female Rotties begin at about one year of age. Cycle lasts for about 21 days during which females have to be confined to avoid soiling her surroundings with the bloody discharge that accompanies estrus. Special britches that use as diapers are available at bet supply stores. Unfortunately britches don’t deter male dogs. When in heat, female dog should be kept away from male dogs if pregnancy is not desireable. Price of sterilization of female dogs is higher than male and recovery period is longer in females.  Health wise there are no differences between incidence of different diseases in male and female Rottweilers. Both sexes are prone to obesity which leads to series of serious medical conditions so balanced nutrition and physical exercise is very important for your Rottweiler and it will keep him strong and muscular.

Your Rottweiler should be kept at home with you. When left alone in a backyard they tend to become bored, destructive and aggressive. If you want to keep your dog outside your yard should be fenced to protect it from running into the traffic, and to protect passersby from it.

Rotties of both sex are great with children, especially if they’re raised with them. While they are around young children they should be supervised due to their size and strength. Their cattle-driving heritage makes them lean and pushes towards children so they can accidentally knock them down. They are protective of their children in groups so if there is a louder play between children, Rottweilers tend to get involved so supervision in large groups is necessary.

All in all the differences between sexes of Rottweiler are not huge but they do exist. Future will probably bring more knowledge about behavioral differences of dogs different sex but the most important thing is that dog’s success depends only on your engagement to making it the happiest puppy.
